Another Tuesday, Another Show

Joining this bowling thing has its benefit. Another "free" show. Trainwreck with Kyle Gass was "headlining" but I couldn't stay that late. School night and all. But another band played before them. Never heard these guys but they have some catchy songs. Their name is The Tales. Free music offered: http://www.myspace.com/thetalesmusic

Are they serious?

Bar Carrera

Went out to dinner with the girlfriend recently. We were headed uptown but go lazy and went down. The question always becomes "where do you go". We wanted something different, that comes with wine preferably, and nothing that will cause me to unbutton my jeans during dinner. Enter Bar Carrera. A friend took me there not to long ago and I have been trying to take my better half over there. What better time then now huh?

We had several small dishes: chorizo and shrimp, pork belly, jamon wrapped dates stuffed with almonds, and my favorite- smoked salmon with marscapone drizzled with honey topped with black caviar on a toasted brioche. Yummmm

I should have taken more photos but once a forks' in my hand and food is in front of me you can pull back a stump if your not careful.

Totto Ramen for Lunch

Day off and got to finally taste the new ramen spot in mid town, Totto Ramen. My girlfriend and a friend went the other week and said it was delicious. For her is reminded her of Japan. Not as good as some of the stuff we had there but better than some places here. And he is cheap and actually did not mind paying more than $0.25 for a bowl.

Staff was friendly and helpful. Worked hard over the stove in a tight space.

It really was very tasty. So much so that this is definitely a "come to" spot from now on. I don't care how far it is.

I got the Semi Spicy ramen and she got the Miso. I now wish I could have eaten both. Plus we ordered the special, Ru-mushubi. Rice ball wrapped in seaweed with char-sui in the middle. Yummmm.

We got there before the place opened at 12 and there were already 5 people waiting. After signing and a short wait we got to have a seat and tuck in. The place got packed by 12:10 but it isn't that big to begin with. Quick lunch very little small talk and then we were out. Thhis was the line when we left at 12:30:

Mighty tasty.

You know things are bad when the question you ask is "Did the boxes for the bunk bed come before or after the piss?"

Things found in my girlfriends elevator

You are gonna love this.

- This thing is like Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors. What I don't get is the little pot next to it. What? Was that the original dish this thing came in?

Also a little freaky is what was in the dirt at the base of the plants -

Blue Scholars

Tonight at Bowery Ballroom - Blue Scholars.

I like the band but do I have the energy to stand for a couple of hours at the end of a tiring week is the question.

Tonight wasn't bad. Caught Ziggy's show at Brooklyn Bowl. Honestly, I have never heard him before. Live or otherwise. I like.

First day of class

Signed up for Mandarin lessons. Shoulda been Cantonese but there isn't a lot of options. Correction there isn't a lot of reasonably priced options to choose from. Plus my girlfriends Grandmother recommended Mandarin anyway. Said it was more useful. Well, I was told she recommended Mandarin seeing as I can't really understand her. She speaks Cantonese. Which was part of the reason I was looking for a Cantonese class. After this I still won't be able to understand a thing she says. How did I get here again?
Traveling here sucked. I completely forgot why I hate the express train during rush hour. Spent 15 minutes warm humid cheek to warm humid cheek with a woman in tights or leggings or whatever they are called nowadays. Yes by "cheek to cheek" I mean our asses. And by "woman wearing tights" I don't mean she should have been wearing tights. God I hate confined spaces. Anywhere with a lot of people in a close area. There is this one area walking towards the WTC PATH train that during work mornings and evenings shuttles human cattle to and fro. I refer to it as "the Chute". Hate that area too.
So here I am class. Wanted to get here early just to get a sense of where everything is. Online and registration said we won't need passes to get to class. Mr. Security Guard says they lied. Things are getting off to a good start.
How do you say "pain in my ass" in Mandarin? That's the first question I am asking?

South Orange Blues Festival

Little rain is a great time to play the blues. No tent? Even more so.

Just finished a quick book. "Crooked Little Vein" by a favorite comic book writer of mine. Not a lot of thinking involved but just a fun read. Learning experience too. Check what I found because of it -

New toy time

Ah, I love new toy time. Packaging is brand spanking new, delicately placed in a corner. Completely useless except for throwing other smaller useless stuff in. Depending on the product, in this case a phone but could just as well be a camera or guitar, is gingerly handled and wrapped in protective plastic to ward off the inevitable scratch. We constantly have to touch this thing just to make sure we justify the purchase knowing eventually we will fall out of love and move on the next shiny instrument that will hold our attention until we tire of that one still. But for right now....oh new toy time how I love you so.
